What is POPI?
Also known as the Protection of Personal Information Act, its general purpose is to set out the guidelines and requirements that businesses and private individuals are required to follow when sourcing, storing, processing and sharing personal information. Personal information relates to any identifiable information linked to an employee or client, such as an identification number, name and surname, email address, physical address or contact number.

The POPI Act is the highest of authority and outlines the conditions when storing and processing personal information:

Any businesses or private entities who source, process, store, and share data will be required to adhere to the POPI Act and Popi Act regulations. You can read more about the POPI Act in South Africa here.
