Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly are tax returns?

Tax Returns in South Africa refer to the process where businesses submit a portion of their income to the South African Revenue Service (SARS). This submission is based on the company’s annual taxable income. Understanding tax returns, such as IRP6 forms and IT14 submissions, is crucial for compliant financial management.

Companies in South Africa need to submit their Tax Returns to SARS multiple times a year. The schedule includes:

  1. Provisional Tax Return (IRP6): This is due 6 months from the first day of the Financial year and again at the end of the Financial year.
  2. Annual Tax Return (IT14): This must be submitted within 4 to 12 months from the last day of the financial year-end.

Provisional Tax is a method of paying income tax in advance. It’s meant to help both companies and individuals manage their tax liability efficiently. This tax requires taxpayers to estimate their income and expenses before the end of the financial year, leading to a provisional tax amount payable to SARS. Notably, Provisional Tax payments are divided into two installments during the year.

An ITR14 is an annual tax submission form required for each financial year. It’s a comprehensive document that details a company’s income, deductions, and tax credits for a specific period. Submitting an accurate ITR14 is essential for maintaining compliance with SARS regulations.

Yes, online businesses in South Africa are subject to the same tax regulations as traditional businesses. This includes registering for eFiling and meeting all relevant SARS deadlines for tax returns, including IRP6 and IT14 submissions. Additionally, if an online business’s revenue exceeds R1 million, it must register for VAT and comply with VAT submission requirements.

If your Provisional Tax estimates are not accurate, it could result in either underpayment or overpayment of tax. Underpayment may attract penalties and interest charges from SARS. If you overestimate and overpay, the excess amount can be credited against future tax liabilities or refunded. Accurate estimations are crucial to avoid these complications.

We advise that professional tax practitioners offer assistance to avoid penalties from SARS.

The IRP6 form is used for submitting Provisional Tax. This form allows businesses to declare estimated income for the year and calculate the tax owed on this amount. Provisional Tax aims to spread the tax liability over the relevant year of assessment, making it less burdensome for taxpayers. There are typically two IRP6 submissions per financial year.
