More Info & FAQs on Cross-Border Permits in South Africa:
What is a Cross-Border Permit?

In accordance with the Cross-Border Road Transport Act 4 of 1998, cross-border permits allow cross-border business operators to conduct cross-border road transport businesses in South Africa and neighbouring countries. It is a permit that allows the cross-border road transportation of goods for business purposes.

The main advantage is to ensure a more streamlined flow of passengers and/or goods between borders. The permits assist by ensuring that there are no delays at the border for freight operators, passenger transport, and tourism vehicles to move from one SADC country to the next.

There are different types of permits for passenger and freight road transport operators. These are categorised as follows:

  • Bus Passenger Permits
  • Taxi Passenger Permits
  • Tourist Passenger Permits
  • Organised Group Permits
  • Cabotage Permits
  • Goods Permit

We quote you upon application if you need one of the following permits:

  • Class 1 (Below 20 000kg): 3 Month Permit
  • Class 1 (Below 20 000kg): 1 Year Permit
  • Class 2 (Above 20 000kg): 3 Month Permit
  • Class 2 (Above 20 000kg): 1 Year Permit

The main requirements to apply and/or acquire a cross border permit are briefly:

  1. Roadworthy Certificate;
  2. Valid Vehicle License;
  3. Vehicle Registration Certificate;
  4. Company Registration Documents;
  5. Tax Clearance Certificate (Pin);
  6. SARS Registered Representative updated at SARS
