In accordance with the Cross-Border Road Transport Act 4 of 1998, cross-border permits allow cross-border business operators to conduct cross-border road transport businesses in South Africa and neighbouring countries. It is a permit that allows the cross-border road transportation of goods for business purposes.

The main advantage is to ensure a more streamlined flow of passenger and/or goods between borders. The permits assist by ensuring that there are no delays at the border for freight operators, passenger transport, and tourism vehicles to move from one SADC country to the next.

There are different types of permits for passenger and freight road transport operators. These are categorized as follows:
