In this article, we will discuss everything you need to know about COIDA Registration in South Africa as well as the process to complete your department of labour coida online registration easy and fast.
COIDA stands for the Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act.
This Act ensures financial compensation to employees in the event of any injuries or diseases sustained at or during work. It also provides compensation in the case of work-related death.
This financial aid is called the Workmen’s Compensation Fund. The fund is a form of insurance that helps you compensate your employees reasonably in the case of work-related injuries, diseases or even death.
Any business with one or more employees should register their company for COIDA, as required by law.
The only exceptions are government departments and certain mining or building sectors who need to register with Rand Mutual Assurance (RMA).
Once your COIDA registration is complete, you will receive a Compensation Fund number, also referred to as a CF number.
This is your unique reference number that will be used when paying out claims or doing your Return of Earning submissions to the Department. The Department will then be able to pay your company out in the case of successful claims.
There are two main options to register for COIDA.
Option number 1: Register directly at the Department of Labour.
If you have the time to spare, are familiar with COIDA regulations, and don’t need one-on-one support through the registration process, this would be your best option.

Once you are COIDA registered, you are able to apply for your Letter of Good Standing.
In order to successfully receive your Letter of Good Standing, you need to submit your Return of Earnings.
The Return of Earnings is an estimate of your total projected staff salaries for the year in advance. This total amount will be used to calculate what is due to the Compensation Fund. This return needs to be submitted every April of every year, as this is the month where the Letter of Good Standing expires each year.
So for example: If you get your Letter of Good Standing in February, it will expire in April the same year and you’ll need to renew it again.
Once your Return is submitted, the Department of Labour will assess the Return of Earnings. They will then send you a Notice of Assessment with the amount due to the Compensation Fund. Once you have paid this amount, the Letter of Good Standing will be issued to you.

1. Tenders and Contracts. All tender applications require you to produce a Letter of Good Standing. It is important to note that having a Letter of Good Standing will not give you an unfair advantage in the awarding of any tender, but rather it grants you the opportunity to apply.
2. Employees’ protection. Being COIDA registered allows compensation of employees when injured at work. In the event of death of an employee, the dependents of the deceased qualify for benefits.
3. Less cost to Company. If the company’s Return of Earnings are up to date, the company will not be held liable for the expenses incurred when an employee gets injured at work.
4. Business Compliance. Ensure your business is compliant as it is required by law to be compliant with the Labour Department if you have employees. In industries relating to construction such as the NHBRC, COIDA registration is of the utmost importance.
